Azores Military Museum
The Azores Military Museum was formally established in 1993. In 1999, its first director was appointed and, following restoration and rehabilitation works on its facilities, it officially opened to the public in 2005.
It is housed in the Fort of São Brás, located in Ponta Delgada, a 16th-century fortification of regular bastioned typology, inspired by the Italian Renaissance model, and classified since 1953 as a property of public interest.
Under the hierarchical authority of the Azores Military Command and the technical and functional supervision of the Directorate of Military History and Culture, the Azores Military Museum is dedicated to the collection, research, conservation, dissemination, and enhancement of historical-military heritage from a regional perspective. Its mission is to strengthen collective memory and identity and to contribute to the promotion of national citizenship values.
The Azores Military Museum holds a highly diverse collection, comprising over 1,000 items organized into several collections that span different periods in the military history of the Azores and the Portuguese Army.
Among these noteworthy collections include light and heavy infantry weapons, field artillery, anti-aircraft and coastal artillery, as well as engineering, logistics, military medicine, uniforms, music, and communications.
The themes of the Azores Military Museum were defined by Order No. 60 of May 2013 by His Excellency the Chief of Staff of the Army and focus on the following topics:
The collections of the Azores Military Museum are displayed across 12 exhibition spaces.
In the temporary exhibition room, the aim is to highlight specific aspects of the Azores’ military history and to stimulate interest in the region's fortifications and military infrastructure.
The museum also features three thematic rooms dedicated to World War I, World War II, and the Colonial War. Through iconographic and informational materials presented on panels, along with displays of weaponry and equipment, visitors can deepen their understanding of these events and their impact on the archipelago.
In the remaining permanent exhibition rooms, various collections are showcased, including displays of bladed weapons, the historical evolution of firearm mechanisms, and a selection of Portuguese Army uniforms.
